Citizenship by Descent
Overview
Citizenship by Descent applications may be lodged at the Australian High Commission, Nairobi.
People born outside Australia after 26 January 1949 may be eligible for citizenship by descent, if:
• At least one parent was an Australian citizen at the time of the person’s birth; and
• They are of good character.
If you are an Australia citizen or permanent resident and have had a baby overseas, you will need to register your child and obtain an Extract of Citizenship by Descent certificate in order to apply for an Australian passport.
Requirements
We require the following:
• Signed application Form 118
• Evidence that the child is the natural child of an Australian citizen by way of the child’s full birth certificate, issued by the authorities of the country in which the child was born, showing details of both parents (translated into English where required)
• Evidence of Australian citizenship of at least one parent by way of one of the following: Australian birth certificate (for parents born before 20/8/86), or certificate of Australian citizenship (grant or declaratory), or unrestricted Australian passport issued after 22/11/84
• Evidence of change of name (if appropriate, eg. marriage certificate, deed poll)
